Frequently asked questions about our specialty crop production

Whether you're seeking a reliable source for high-quality, value-added specialty crops or are interested in our sustainable farming practices, here’s some additional insight into our operations and values.

What types of crops does Weiland Farms specialize in growing?

While we excel in high-volume corn production, our real expertise lies in growing value-added specialty crops and alternative row crops and small grain crops, such as food-grade soy and millet. And we continually adapt to market opportunities to better serve our partners, such as producing foundational seed for small grains.

Our robust infrastructure, technology, people and processes enable us to offer a diverse crop portfolio to serve our customers’ needs. If there’s a specific crop you’re interested in, please contact us to discuss how we can meet your needs.

How do you tailor your crop production to meet our specific needs?

We collaborate with our clients to understand each crop's unique requirements. Our in-house agronomic expertise and technological capabilities enable us to adapt our farming practices to produce crops that meet your specific standards for quality, sustainability and traceability. We’d love to learn about your business’s current priorities.

How do you ensure the quality and consistency of crops?

We operate on a philosophy of continuous improvement. This is implemented through stringent quality control measures at every stage of crop production management, from seed integrity and planting to harvesting and storage. We also follow ecological farming methods to promote soil health and crop vitality, mitigating risks associated with crop health and yield.

How does Weiland Farms’ location benefit our specialized crop production?

Our reliable production is supported by several factors unique to the north-central Iowa climate:

  • Superior soil quality: Our region is home to some of the world's most fertile land, in large part due to our soil’s robust water-holding capacity. In fact, Iowa soils have the potential to hold 10 to 11 inches of moisture in the top five feet of soil. This advantage not only facilitates plant growth and productivity but also helps safeguard against potential drought risk by ensuring adequate moisture supply throughout the growing season.
  • Consistent and plentiful rainfall: Our farms benefit from ample rainfall, a critical factor for reducing production risks. During the growing season (April to October), we average about 26 inches of rainfall. Our rainfall is also relatively consistent: Since 1895, annual precipitation ranged from a low of 20 inches to a high of 48 inches.

These geographical and climactic advantages — combined with our farming expertise, operational efficiency and commitment to sustainability — make Weiland Farms a reliable choice for specialized crop production.

Does Weiland Farms offer organic crop production?

We don’t currently offer organic production services. However, if this is a goal for your business, please contact us to discuss your specific needs.

How do you support sustainable and traceable farming?

Sustainability and traceability are at the core of how we operate as professional growers. We take a proactive approach to soil health, crop rotation, water conservation and other environmental factors, and, with experience in various systems, can customize our approach to meet your sustainability goals. Additionally, we maintain meticulous records to ensure the traceability of our crops, from seed to harvest.
